Can you sign it this way?
Signing a change order on the jobsite, from a phone
Yes, a change order can be signed electronically, and the job site is where it should happen. The extra work gets approved in a driveway conversation; six weeks later the invoice arrives and the customer remembers a different number. A change order signed on the spot, before the first extra hour, is the whole fix. Electronic signatures on contracts are recognized under the federal ESIGN Act and state UETA laws.
The thirty-second version
Open the change order template on your phone, fill in the work, the price change and the schedule change, add the customer by name and mobile number, and send. They get a text with a link, read it, agree to sign electronically, sign, and both of you have the certified copy before you walk back to the truck.
If the customer is standing next to you, skip the text: tap Sign here now and hand them your phone. They sign on your device with you present, and their certified copy still goes to their own email or number.
What the signed record captures
The change order itself, with the original scope referenced and the new amount stated. The customer's consent to sign electronically. The time they opened it and the time they signed, the device they used, and a fingerprint of the exact document they saw. A certificate with all of it is appended to the PDF, the PDF is digitally sealed, and each signature carries a code anyone can check at signathing.com/verify.
That is the difference between a text that says "ok go ahead" and a record: when memories differ months later, the record shows what was agreed, by whom, and when.
Paper change orders already on the clipboard
Photograph the pages with your phone, place the signature and date fields, and send. The edges get squared up automatically. The customer signs the same form they are used to, and the certified copy replaces the one that would have faded in the truck.
Who else should see it
Add the office or the project manager as a view-only recipient. They get a certified copy the moment it completes without a signature line, so billing sees the change the day it was approved instead of at the end of the month.
Common questions
- Does the customer need an app?
- No. The link opens in the phone's browser. They sign and are done.
- What if they are standing right there?
- Tap Sign here now and hand over your phone. The link works for one hour and one signature, and their certified copy still goes to them.
- Can I reuse the same change order form?
- Yes. Save it as a template once. Each new change order starts from it with the fields already placed.
- Does a change order signed on a phone count the same as one on paper?
- Electronic signatures on contracts are recognized under the federal ESIGN Act and state UETA laws. What matters afterward is the record: who signed, when, what they saw, and whether it changed. That record is stronger on the certified copy than on a clipboard.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Unlimited change orders, no subscription, no card.
